The peaceful unification of Germany, including the granting of full NATO membership, is the focus of the 436 previously unpublished documents contained in this volume. Also in 1990, European integration made further progress; the “Charter of Paris” ended the East-West bloc confrontation; and the new importance of the UN fed hopes for a new world order. Yet doubt was soon cast on such hopes by Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait in early August.
