In addition to the fundamental change in Central and Eastern Europe with the opening of the Berlin Wall, the epochal year 1989 brought further challenges for Bonn’s politics, which are presented here in detail for the first time: the suppression of the democracy movement in China, the Libyan chemical plant in Rabta, the Colonia Dignidad in Chile, the Rushdie case and its consequences for relations with Iran, the dispute over short-range nuclear missiles, the CSCE process, and the path to European economic and monetary union.
